Pericardium Basin Prototype and Rendering

PERICARDIUM WELL

KINDHEART

A mount to hold porcine tissue for practicing open heart surgeries.

CAD Modeling, Mold Tool Design, 3D Scanning, RTV Casting, CNC Routing

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

  • Watertight enclosure
  • Reusable and cleanable design
  • Attachment locations for a pump
  • Clear walls on the box to visualize how much fluid is building up

CAD of Pericardium Basin

Our team worked to design a mount for placing porcine tissue in to allow doctors to practice open heart surgery on real tissue. The design also included multiple locations for a pump to be placed, allowing blood to be pumped through the vessels of the heart.

The box was designed to be milled from a single sheet of plastic, with two sides being laser cut from clear plastic to allow the surgeon to see if any of the tubes from the pump were clogged.

Pericardium Basin Design

A reusable, silicone tray needed to be designed to hold the real tissue in place. To get the most accurate design, our team 3D scanned a pericardium replica and imported the geometry into CAD.

Because the box needed to be disassembled for cleaning, this presented a challenge in creating a watertight seal. A custom gasket was designed to overcome this challenge and help seal the enclosure.

Prototype of Pericardium Basin for Kindheart

Once the design was complete, we milled the housing, cast the silicone mount and gaskets, and assembled the units.
